Full disclosure; I might be a little bit biased when it comes to Larry Fitzgerald. He’s the most electric player to suit up for my favorite college football team in at least 25 years. On top of that, this past February, he mercilessly shredded my favorite pro football team’s vaunted defense, in the process almost single-handedly rallying the Arizona Cardinals to the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.
Therefore, I assume that Fitzgerald’s name carries a little more meaning, his star burns a little bit brighter for me, than it does for much of America. Still though, his star making turn in Super Bowl 43 was seen in approximately 90 million homes. Couple that with all the buzz surrounding Larry Fitzgerald in fantasy football circles this fall, and you might expect he’d have the ability to be somewhat discerning when selecting his first major endorsement.
Apparently not. The above national commercial began airing this week featuring Fitz shilling not for a sports drink, tennis shoes or even bubble gum, but, instead for…IHOP? That’s right, the man largely considered the best receiver in the NFL is pushing pancakes. As you’ll notice, the ad also features cheesy special effects as well as a sassy, wisecracking fat guy, so clearly IHOP’s marketing team really decided to push the creative envelope.
That said, the “stuffed french toast” is covered in icing shaped like the laces on a football, so perhaps the people behind the whole campaign were out of clever ideas by the time they actually got around to shooting the commercial.
