Baseball fans were treated to something special last night when MLB Network decided to team up Chris Rose, Harold Reynolds and John Smoltz during their creatively titled MLB Tonight show.
While discussing NL league leaders (top five) in ERA and WHIP, this quick exchange took place.
Reynolds: I can’t believe (Ubaldo) Jimenez isn’t on any of these lists.
Rose: Well, he has been struggling for the past two months.
Ugh. I know there has to be an obligatory humidor mention anytime the Rockies are discussed – but seriously, why? It had absolutely nothing to do with the statement Reynolds had made. If Reynolds had said, “Hey, look, Jimenez is all over the leaderboard.” Then you could make a legitimate humidor reference.
That agitates me.
I’m sure it was more an attempt at humor than anything by Smoltz,. But what if it really wasn’t? Think about that for a minute.
Moving on to Chris Rose…
Jimenez has allowed four runs or less in his last eight starts (two runs or less in four of them). He had a rough start in Florida back in July. He had a dreadful start in Philadelphia back in July. Since then, pretty solid.
Not a lot of wins to show for it. No Pitcher of the Month awards like April & May to show for it, but pretty damn solid.
If people ever wonder why (I’m sure they don’t) Rockies fans get so irritated with the national media, this is why. Always painted with a broad brush. Always full of cliched references.
