The Ride Continues, But Who’s Coming Along?

Can Aaron Cook make it back in time? The time for celebration ends, and the time for big decisions arrives.

The Rockies improbable run has unquestionably been aided by their September callups. It’s allowed Clint Hurdle to manage like a wildman, move guys around, have short leashes with his pitchers, pinch run for pinch runners. He’s used the whole cast very well, but now we have to get back to the best 25, and that’s a tall task for this crew.

Much like Adam Godson did for his Cubbies, I think I need to step in, and at least offer some assistance. Hell, Hurdle and the boys could be a little hungover yet, and might not have the proper capacity to make such decisions in this short period of time. The last thing we want is Steve Finley somehow getting the nod, despite being released four months ago.

There are two “wild cards” (pun always intended) to the Rockies roster. Willy Taveras had continued his rehab in hopes of this situation occurring. I believe the Rockies are having a workout as I type this, and if Taveras proves his health, he might find his way on the roster. The other is Aaron Cook, who also continued his rehab from a strained ribcage muscle, but seems less likely to have a shot.

It would be huge risk to use a precious spot on either at this point. Especially Cook, who would obviously fight off rust, and have mechnical issues. Taveras, who’s legs are his complete game, has been dealing with a quad strain. If healthy, he might make for a good pinch run/defensive replacement guy at this stage, but I wouldn’t push him for a full nine.

In making my roster, I am assuming neither guy will be available.

Starters in BOLD.

Catcher – Chris Iannetta, Yorvit Torrealba

Infield – Garrett Atkins, Jamey Carroll, Todd Helton, Kaz Matsui, Omar Quintanilla, Ian Stewart, Troy Tulowitzki

Outfield – Jeff Baker, Brad Hawpe, Matt Holliday, Ryan Spilborghs, Cory Sullivan

Starters – Josh Fogg, Jeff Francis, Ubaldo Jimenez, Franklin Morales

Relievers – Jeremy Affeldt (LHP), Taylor Buchholz, Manny Corpas, Brian Fuentes (LHP), LaTroy Hawkins, Matt Herges, Ryan Speier

The tough calls

Omar Quintanilla or Clint Barmes: I gave Omar a slight nod after seeing Philly has five righties in their bullpen. Both guys give you about the same thing. Barmes has more pop with the bat, but I like Quintanilla’s glove better. Plus, as I said, he’s a lefty bat, and late in the game he can do a lot of things.

Ian Stewart or Seth Smith: Smith had an unbelievable AB against Jake Peavy last night. That being said, I like Stewart for a couple reasons. He’s a home run waiting to happen at anytime. Also, a little more flexibility in the field. He’s a solid glove at third should they need that, and can play first as well. He’s also seen time at second in recent workouts.

Another factor is, I’m thinking Smith might not even be qualified for the postseason roster. He was traveling with the team at the beginning of September, but due to an injury, I’m not sure he was officially activated in time.

Jorge Julio or Ryan Speier: Typically you’d want to go experience in this spot. However, experience tells me Jorge Julio is not really good under the microscope. Four pitch walks, grooved fastballs, and high blood pressure, don’t make for postseason success. Speier is the hot arm right now, and I trust him in just about any spot. Maybe this one wasn’t so tough for me, but I feel it will be excruciating for the coaching staff.

I have a sneaky feeling Mark Redman might find his way on as well. I’m having a hard time finding a spot for him, but he’s a guy the coaching staff feels comfortable with.

Stay tuned.

Alas, this next stop is where the Rockies get off.

    Ride over. Philly in four.
