In case you missed it, the St. Louis Cardinals collapsed last night at Coors Field.¬† The Cards took a 9-3 lead to the bottom of the 9th inning, only to allow an insane nine run Rockies rally, capped off by Mr. Late Night’s 3-run walk-off against closer Ryan Franklin.
Actually, I prefer to say the Rockies scored nine runs and kicked the Cardinals in the guts as they have so many other teams the past four seasons, but for the purposes of this piece, we’ll go with the Cardinals blew it hardcore.
I’m looking forward to the pre-game presser tomorrow to see what Tony LaRussa has to say.¬† I know he was severely pissed immediately after the game, but let’s hear him after a 12 hour cooling off period.¬† My best guess is he’ll accuse the Rockies of raising the mound between the top and bottom of the 9th inning.¬† About 3 o’clock in the afternoon he’ll be out there with a tape measure again.
Let’s see what “Cardinal Nation” had to say about this one.
Did I seriously witness the Cardinals give up 9 runs in the last inning?
Yup.  Your eyes did not deceive you.
Cardinals really disappointed me tonight gosh so mad and angry inside uuughhh
You have to let that anger out!
Well- that Cardinals game makes we want to throw kittens and children into wood chippers. Awesome loss Cards- Jesus that was pathetic.
On second thought, let’s keep that anger bottled up inside.
Do the Cardinals enjoy blowing?
Do they have a choice?
Rockies scored 9 runs in 9th to beat Cardinals 12-9. Hmm. Who knew the Red Sox traded Jonathan Papelbon to St. Louis? #mlb
That’s a cheap shot!¬† I like it.
Disgusted at how the cardinals played tonight.
Well, if by tonight you mean the 26 minute bottom of the 9th inning… then yes, you should be disgusted.¬† The other 2 hours, 53 minutes looked pretty good though.
This bullpen needs an enema.
I think I know where most Cardinals fans would stick it.
Cardinals bullpen “ace” Ryan Franklin has just been voted to the All-Star game extra spot by fans from the American League.
Why doesn’t make sense is how the cardinals can be winning 9-3 in the 8th and then blow it and lose 12-9 god I hate when we do that!!
The Cardinals were 38-0 when leading after 8 innings this season, so that’s a pretty slim sample size with which to base this collapse on.¬† Also, when you look at some of the fat pitches Ryan Franklin was throwing, coupled with the positioning of the Cardinals outfielders, it actually makes perfect sense how this happened.
were the #cardinals outfielders playing on the warning track in the 9th??
Though I’d have to watch the film again to confirm this, I’m fairly certain Randy Winn was positioned in the Rockies bullpen on CarGo’s and Giambi’s base hits.¬† Thankfully for the Rockies they both hit 375 foot bloopers that stayed in the yard.
I am cursed. I have not been to a winning Cardinals game in 5 years. How do you blow a 6 run lead in the bottom of the ninth?!?!?!
Ouch.  I almost know the feeling.  My jinxing never reached a level quite this epic, though.  Close a couple times, but never this epic.  You are severely cursed.
Well, at least Cardinals’ fans can’t blame Matt Holliday for that loss.
Why the hell not?  That sounds kinda fun!
I come home to see the Cardinals in a 9-2 lead so I decide to head to bed only to find out they lost 9-12. Are you kidding me!!!
You don’t go to bed until Seth Smith says you can go to bed!
In honor of the Cardinals bullpen this evening: (video)
And we close this out with Vin Scully, whose way with words is a once in a lifetime treat.
Vin doesn’t Tweet, but he can be retweeted.¬† We thank @jerfitzpatrick
Vin Scully on the Rockies’ 9-run ninth inning to beat the Cardinals 12-9: “There are no fat ladies in Denver.” Hope that guy lives forever.
I hope so too.
Now, let’s see if we can’t get 3-4 hours sleep tonight and do this all over again tomorrow.¬† I know I’m game.
