Clemens’ elbow: Take ligaments from Farnsworth, Pavano

Ligaments from Farnsworth (top left) and Pavano (bottom left) could be surgically placed in Roger Clemens' elbow, shown here, for this year's playoff run.Seriously, doctors can clone sheep, perform heart transplants and magically – and thankfully – get the Buffalo Bills’ Kevin Everett to walk again.  Is it really too much to ask to have doctors take ligaments from the arms of Yankee pitchers Kyle Farnsworth and Carl Pavano and have them surgically placed in the ailing elbow of Roger Clemens?

Hell, both pitchers must have some impressive ligaments under all that dumb skin.  But they either don’t want to use them (Pavano) or cannot figure out how to use them correctly (Farnsworth), so they should just take one for the team and give them to Roger.  Say what you will about Clemens, but he is likely the greatest pitcher most of us will ever see in our lifetimes.  And I’m all for having him stick around as long as possible – even if that means slicing up the Yankees’ bullpen to make it happen.  And don’t you go too far either, Mike Mussina.  You might be on the downside of your career, but if there’s something in that old body – a spare groin, a rotator cuff, even some synovial fluid we can squeeze out and insert into Roger’s joints for fluidity – we might just slice you up as well.

An MRI exam this week in Clemens’ pitching elbow showed slight ligament damage and internal bleeding. Oddly enough, a blister on his right foot may have altered his mechanics, leading to the sore elbow.  Nevertheless, Clemens intends to pitch Sunday in Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox, which harkens us back to that loudmouth Curt Schilling and his stupid bloody sock.  It should make for some exciting baseball.

Speaking of the Red Sox, last night with the Yankees beating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 and the Sox losing to Tampa, just for an instant the AL East Crown felt like it was coming back to the Bronx.  Then the Red Sox began whomping the ball, turning a seven-run deficit into a seven-run lead.  There is still a lot of baseball left to play, but I’ve turned from hoping the Red Sox lose to hoping the Tigers lose, resigning myself to the Wild Card.

Still, it’s always nice to see the Red Sox squirm down the stretch.

Phil Hughes got the win last night, will keep all his ligaments in tact.Hopefully, Jason Giambi will get back to form after last night.  Giambi sealed the victory with a fifth-inning Grand Slam, his first of the season and 12th of his career.  Giambi has been in a slump – for years now, isn’t it? – but hopefully he can provide an anchor for the middle of the lineup if the Yankees do make the Wild Card.

When Phil Hughes pitches, it’s nearly as difficult to watch as when they throw Farnsworth in there.  Last night was one of his better efforts.  He threw 106 pitches, at times looked like the Yankees’ future he is supposed to be, and only gave up one earned run – although he was hit hard early and was only kept in the game by great plays by Melky Cabrera and Johnny Damon.

Hughes insists on pitching behind batters in the count, which always leads to walks, which in his case always leads to run.  Last night Hughes walked three batters, a problem he hopefully can overcome as he matures.

Edwar Ramirez – 2 innings pitched, 5 strikeouts, no walks, no runs.

Actually, Farnsworth has settled in to be a very steady setup guy, putting up lots of zeroes in his last 10 games or so.

Clemens? Time to retire and then have the intelligence to stay that way.
