Price for Sabathia just went up

I saw Chien-Ming Wang hobbling home on a base hit by Derek Jeter Sunday and my first thought was “Oh God, no.”

My second thought — the Yankees need and Indians asking price for C.C. Sabathia just skyrocketed.

I hate inter-league play, always have. Yankees vs. Mets is exciting, but it puts American League pitchers at tremendous risk of injury. Remember, some of these guys haven’t been on the basepaths since high school.

Here’s Mike Mussina on the subject.

“American League pitchers are at the most risk, because we don’t hit, we don’t run the bases,” Mussina said. “You get four or five at-bats a year at most, and if you happen to get on base once or twice, you never know. We run in straight lines most of the time. Turning corners, you just don’t do that.”

It is pointless, though, to debate inter-league play. It isn’t going to change, and neither are the DH/no DH rules.

No matter the rules or circumstances, the fact is Wang, the Yankees ace got hurt en route to improving to 8-2. He was pitching his second straight terrific game after suffering through the worst slump of his career. The Yankees are calling the injury a sprained foot for now, but the speculation is that this is very likely a serious Lisfranc injury that will end Wang’s season.

So, of course, the Yankees thoughts have to turn to Sabathia, the Indians Cy Young Award-winning left-hander.

Tyler Kepner of the New York Times analyzed the pros and cons of a deal for Sabathia, and this is part of what he had to say.

The upside is alluring. If the Yankees trade for Sabathia, who is a very large man but has no injury history, they instantly replace one ace with another for 2008 and continue the business of contending for a playoff spot.

They would get a three-month trial run with the best pitcher on the free-agent market, and then they could re-sign him and enter the new ballpark with three ace-type pitchers – Sabathia, Wang and Chamberlain – born in the 1980s. Presumably there would still be some prospects left to fill the other spots in the rotation, and maybe a veteran like Mike Mussina or Andy Pettitte would return for another season.

Since I can’t imagine that the Yankees conceding the season, the likelihood Sabathia will be in pinstripes by mid-summer has increased dramatically.

Yes, but as I see it, there are two potential ways Cleveland could go with making a C.C. trade decision:

    1. We have several team needs to fill (at least one big bat in our lineup, someone reliable for our bullpen), and trading C.C. would hopefully let us fill some of those needs. Besides, letting C.C. walk away at season’s end without getting anything for him would be stupid, stupid, stupid.
    2. Fausto’s injured. Westbrook’s out for the season. With our options at starting pitching now limited and with a lot of season left to play (we could still make a run at the Central), giving up C.C. now could very well take us out of serious contention. Sure, his record’s 5-8 right now, but he’s pitched like last year’s self for his past 10 or so starts. He’s one of two dependable active starters for Cleveland right now (Laffey and Sowers are too young for me to consider them dependable). Do we really want to give that up now?

There are obviously pros and cons to both decisions. I think it depends on what the Yankees have to offer Cleveland. Honestly, I’m not sure the Yanks have anything right now that would make giving up C.C. worth it — but then again, I have a completely biased opinion.

This is a tough call for both sides. If you are Cleveland, though, I think you have to be realistic. Sabathia is not re-signing, and holding him when you can accumulate a few young prospects is foolish.

I hope we don’t trade for Sabathia. As much as we need pitching now, I’d sacrifice the rest of this season instead of making a deal we’ll probably regret next year.

It’s a lisfranc injury, just as anticipated. 6 weeks in a boot, minimum. September is a possibility, but I wouldn’t count on it.

As a fan of the Brewers there has been much talk of the Brewers aquiring C.C.

As the lyrics of a famous polka declare ” You can have him, we don’t want him, he’s too fat for us.” True, the man can throw darts, but with his arm comes the rest of his body…which is made primarily of butter. here are some, not all of C.C.’s injury history…..
