A Flaming Charter Jet & Watching the O’s Watch the Rangers

Two posts in one!

MASN’s Steve Melewski reports tonight that the Orioles, en route to Tampa, had a fire on their plane and had to make an emergency landing in Jacksonville. From the Facebook page of O’s baseball ops guy Ned Rice:

“Small fire on our team flight to Tampa Bay. They came on and told us we needed to make an emergency landing, and then we were nearly free falling for a few minutes as they raced to get us on the ground as fast as possible. Currently enjoying the beautiful Jacksonville, FL airport while the fire department inspects our plane. Hope this trip is worth it!”

Did you get that? “…nearly free falling for a few minutes …” Ohshitohshitohshitohshit.

There’ll probably be much more on that tomorrow. Jacksonville’s still 200 miles from Tampa, so I guess they’ll get back on the plane and finish the trip. #not_enough_valium_in_the_world

There were plenty of great moments in Sunday’s home regular-season finale at Camden Yards. But maybe the greatest came after the game.

After Jim Johnson notched his 50th save of the year, the Orioles lined up for the traditional post-win handshakes. But the big TV screen in right center field got switched to the ninth inning of the Angels at Texas game.

An Angels win would’ve assured the O’s of their first postseason berth since 1997. Instead of retreating to the comforts of the clubhouse, the Orioles stayed on the field and watched the top of the ninth with the fans.

Behaving like actual human beings has been a hallmark of Buck Showalter’s Orioles. Robert Andino and Xavier Avery stood in front of a flock of Orioles, fixed on the big screen. Endy Chavez, Tommy Hunter, Omar Quintanilla, Zach Britton … pretty much the whole team.

By now we know that Rangers closer Joe Nathan yakked up the save, allowing a based-loaded double to Torii Hunter. (Seriously, has anyone ever looked into Hunter’s first name? Torii? You can’t have consecutive i’s, guy. Do you dot the second i with a little heart?)

TRIVIA MOMENT: Who’s the only other major leaguer in history to have the letter “i” appear consecutively in his name? Leave your answer in the comments section.

So no big celebration. The O’s waved good bye to the fans, who stayed and stood and cheered their heads off.

Anyway, yeah. Hunter’s knock was in the first game of a doubleheader. And, a little before 10 on Sunday evening, the Angels are trailing in the seventh inning of game 2. An Angels loss assures Baltimore of at least the second wild card spot.

It would’ve been cool to celebrate it with the fans. But then, it also would’ve been cool to not plummet out of the sky on the way to Tampa.

You probably weren’t thinking of these two, but technically they fit your specifications of “hav[ing] the letter ‘i’ appear consecutively in his name.” Got ‘em from baseballreference.com. Don’t have another answer yet. Fun!

    Hisashi Iwakuma 2012-2012
    Akinori Iwamura 2007-2010

I was one of the fans who cheered his head off yesterday (and Saturday night) at Camden Yards. Will have to reattach the old noggin in time to cheer some more while watching the game on teevee tonight.

  2. You are correct, Mr. Laufert; Messrs. Iwakuma and Iwamura do not fit the specifications. A fine attempt. But no.

  3. Wayne Laufert says:

Through another loophole in the parameters: Roy Smalley III.
