There was a scene in some Monty Python movie or another where a two guys in suits of armor are about to have a swordfight. One guy gets his arm lopped off, blood spurting out of the hole in his armor. “That’s OK. I’ll still lick ya!” he exclaims. His opponent chops off the other arm and then a leg. The guy’s hopping on one foot, still talking like he’s going to slice his opponent to pieces. Finally, the guy’s just a head rolling around on the ground. “C’mon! Is that all you got? You want a piece of this?”
Brian Roberts, Nolan Reimold, Jim Thome, Wilson Betemit, Taylor Teagarden, Tsuyoshi Wada … all hurt. All costly injuries. But the most costly injuries of the year were to Nick Markakis and Jason Hammel. And now, after surgeries, rehab and fighting all the way back, they’re both hurt again.
Markakis broke a bone in his hand and had it removed. The bone, not the hand. Slowly, he brought himself back from that injury and has been red hot for the whole second half. Now thumb is broken and he’s probably done for the year. Certainly for the regular season.
Hammel had knee surgery right after the all-star break. And now, the same knee bothered him badly enough to force him out of his second start since the rehab. That’s bad. Because you could argue that Hammel is the O’s best starter this year.
Still, somehow the Orioles managed to pummel the streaking Rays at Camden Yards last night. Steve Johnson replaced Hammel in the fourth inning, put it on cruise and the O’s again tied for the division lead.
Injuries are part of sports and every team has them; many of those teams have had far worse luck than the O’s. But damn. Can the underdogs not get a little break once in a while?
Tampa Bay again tonight at the Yard. Tonight’s first pitch, 7:05
