Peter Angelos: Don’t Let’s Start

Among the best parts of the last two baseball seasons in Baltimore has been the absence of griping about Peter Angelos. Since Angelos bought the Orioles in 1993, fans have groused that he’s unwilling to spend the cash it takes to compete in the American League East. They’ve grumbled that Angelos – a famous know-it-all – thinks he knows better than the baseball guys and vetoes all their decisions.

But a couple of seasons above .500 have quelled a lot of the Angelos hatred. And I gotta tellya, while I’m no fan of Peter G. Angelos Attorney at Law, I’ve enjoyed the respite. But it’s bubbling up again. And maybe with good reason.

Last week, the Orioles traded Jim Johnson – who led the big leagues in saves the last two years – to Oakland for Jemile Weeks and someone who’s even less well-known than Jemile Weeks.

And then last night, the Birds let left fielder Nate McLouth sign a two-year deal with the Nationals and starter Scott Feldman sign for three years with Houston. Both players were guys GM Dan Duquette claimed he wanted back next year. Neither was offered anything from the Orioles.

So what gives? Should we worry that a couple years of winning has empowered the owner to resume chopping salaries?

Johnson was in line to make about $10 million in 2014. He also looked mucho shaky much of the time last season, despite notching 50 saves. McLouth was a fan favorite and contributed pretty heavily, particularly in 2012. But last year … eh. Feldman joined the team last July in a trade that sent Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop to the Cubs. He was a decent enough right hander, but had a pretty ordinary second half.

And then, of course, Carlos Beltran signed with the Yankees. Beltran had been the target of some Orioles interest. But then, so had Mark Teixeira.

The grumbling’s beginning. Buck Showalter said in today’s Baltimore Sun, “There’s a lot of offseason left.” There’s a new one, huh? O’s fans have “There’s a lot of baseball left” tattooed on their brains. But a lot of offseason? Well, yes. I suppose there is.

It’s not time to panic yet. Sure, the Yankees and Boston are making their moves. But the Winter Meetings will fire up soon and there are still some free agents warming on the buffet table.

Don’t start the Angelos hate just yet. Keep it nearby, but don’t fire it up yet.

  1. O's fan in NY says:

No, it’s bubbling….this is not the division to nickle and dime, but on the other hand would YOU have given those numbers to Cano, or any of the other players….? Please tell us who you think deserves the moolah….

  2. I’m not sure, NY O’s. Beltran would have been nice. And it’s certainly a familiar feeling to have the winter meetings unfold and the biggest names signing with the biggest teams, while the O’s let free agents pass them by. This morning’s comments from Duquette were not encouraging; something to the effect of “we’re going to continue buidling from within.” That’s fine, but right now, there’s not enough talent to compete. A few pieces needed. It’s starting to look like one of those pieces is Bartolo Colon.
