Brett Myers blows (the game); screams obscenities at reporter

There is no better way to start your playoff surge than dropping four of the first five games of a ten game homestand in late August.

Fortunately for the Phils, they accomplished that tough feat last night when Uncle Cholly brought the closer, Brett Myers, into the game in a non-save situation to immediately give up a home run to some fella named Kevin Kouzmanoff. And just to make sure the game was over, he then proceeded to let Terrmel Sledge take him yard two batters later. But Brett wasn’t done there. After the game in the post game press conference, Myers admitted he thought both of those balls were “just pop ups.” When Sam Carchidi, a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer axed Brett if he honestly thought those two balls were pop ups, things got interesting.

After the jump is the audio of the argument, as well as the must read conversation between the two:

Sam Carchidi: “You thought they both were pop ups?”

Brett Myers: “Yeah, didn’t you? You think they crushed ‘em?”

SC: “The first one I thought was out, the second one no.”

BM: “Yeah, cause you’re a retard, you don’t know shit about fuckin’ baseball. You’re filling in for somebody.”

SC: “How do you spell ‘retard’?”

BM: “You know how to spell it, it’s in your fuckin’ vocabulary, I’m sure you know.”

SC: “You are classy, I’ll tell ya.”

BM: “Go on. [Get] outta here, you fuckin’ idiot.”

SC: [pointing at Brett Myers] “You’re the fuckin’ idiot.”

BM: “Hey! You pointin’ at me motherfucker?! I’ll tell you what, dude, I’ll knock you mutherfucking out! FUCK YOU!!! You’re tough when fuckin’ people are standing in front of you, aren’t you, you piece of shit! Come on! You fucking idiot. Yeah, you’re tough when fuckin’ people are standing in front of you, you stupid ass.”

SC: “I’m a retard?”

BM: “Yeah, that’s right, YOU ARE, you’re a fucking idiot. You ask stupid ass fucking questions!”

Unedited Audio of Brett Myers vs. Sam Carchidi [explicit language]

Brett was then restrained by Shane Victorino, Pat Burrell & Antonio Alfonseca.

It sounds like those anger management classes worked out great for Mr. Myers.

  1. Brett Myers has some problems, not the least of which is not being a great pitcher. He would be much, much better off just keeping his mouth shut. In all fairness, though, the reporter doesn’t sound like the classiest guy in the world, either.

  2. Robuka Kenderle says:

Sorry but once birdbrain the mediocre pitcher called the reporter a retard, the gloves were off. His spelling question was brilliant because it was a perfect reply. No violence or foul language, he simply made fun of his presumed lack of grade 1 reading skills.

I have no idea where you get the he is not classy part.
The only thing he probably shouldnt have done was reply to the the fucknig idiot quote with a generic No, You’re the fuckin’ idiot. Not because its not classy but because it would have been more effective to continue with the mocking ‘spell retard’ and would have enraged Birdbrain even more.

The only athletes (well, they play baseball which is almost a sport) who fight worse than MLB players are NBA players and the basketball players are huge so at least you have the fear that a punch might actually connect one day.
Baseball players look like hookers fighting over a john.

As well, I love how birdbrain is offering to fight the guy knowing full well that before a punch is even thrown, there would be a swarm of people trying to protect the million dollar bad investment and there is no way a reporter would risk his job with such a no win situation.

THere was a reporter with the Montreal Expos years ago who was dealing with some major league dickhead ..either Mike Lansing or Grudzielanek. The player offered to beat the reporters ass to which the reporter replied with a “meet me at this boxing gym any time you want and you can try IF you are a man’.
The player freaked out, had to be fake restrained and promised that any time any place was good with him.
Then ALL the reporters turned towards the player and told him they would be right there to watch especially since the reporter was a champion tae kwan do competitor while going through college and still trains in a boxing gym to keep in shape!
Ballplayer left the room quietly without saying a word.
He also NEVER said another word, good or bad to the reporter.
I heard this story on the radio and the guy talking said that the other beat reporters were egging the ballplayer for weeks afterwards to keep his word….until he blew up at the other reporters of which one responded by doing a caricature Kung fu pose and then the whole room started laughing at the ballplayer.
He also mentioned that if the fight had actually taken place, every reporter would have cheered wildly for a knock out.
Cant remember if its Mike Lansing or Mark Grudzielanek but both were condescending, drama queens… so im sure that either of them getting their ass kicked would have made a lot of people happy.

    Anyone have video?

  3. David Palanker says:

The Phillies are in this closer mess for 1 reason. Pat Gillick. He would not give Wagner a fourth year like he wanted. Said he would be past his prime and too old, and not worth the 10 million or so that he wanted in that fourth year. The alternative? Gordon, who will be 1 month shy of 41 when he finishes his 3 year
contract. Wagner on the other hand, will be 38 at the end of his 4 year signing. Now who will be older? Wagner makes 10.5 million this year. Gordon makes 7.0 and Mesa makes 2.5 for 9.5 million total. Gordon’s ERA is 6.14, and mesa is 7.59. Wagnor’s is 2.05. Who would you rather have on your team? How could they bring back Mesa after the mess he was 3 years ago. And now he is blowing up. Gordons done. Wagnor has 29 saves. Gillick and the cheap owners are the problem. They have only thereselves to blame again this year.

  4. J Rose says:

Oh man, I hope his wife slept over a friend’s house that night.

  5. Ryan says:

The reporter doesn’t sound like the classiest guy in the world?
Maybe not, but what’s he supposed to do? Take that carp laying down because Myers is an athlete and Carchidi is just a journalist? Preposterous. No one’s ever obligated to let anyone speak to them like that.

  6. Sal Paradise says:

Myers is striking out 12 batters per 9 innings this year. He’s had shitty defense behind him, and poor luck with batters left on base (read: bad timing). I’d take a 26 year-old 5 million dollar Myers over a 10 million dollar 36 year-old Wagner any day of the week if I were the Phillies.

Now the personality on the other hand…

  7. Mike B says:

What’s Myers weigh like 240? A wife beater who picks on unsuspecting reporters.

Time to warm up Tom Gordon!

  8. Bo says:

The reporter is trying to get famous by goading Myers.

He deserves to get his butt kicked

  9. Tacobellmanager says:

Myers’ “You don’t know shit about baseball,” was completely uncalled for. This was a normal conversation up to that point, and the reporter did not offer some snide answer to provoke him. Myers is a fucking asshole, top to bottom, and he won’t be in the league much longer. Oh wait, I guess he will, because GMs have convinced themselves that the save is a meaningful stat, and closers are not a dime a dozen, can’t be grown in their farm systems, certainly can’t be made out of middle relievers.

Every god damn year we see a new crop of about half-a-dozen reliable “closers” — and rather than people going, hey, pitch the last inning of a victory, pretty easy job — the group think devolves to, wow, shiny toy, must have, spend spend spend. Myers and the Phillies deserve each other, Myers for being a terrible pitcher in a town that’s hard on superstars, and the Phillies for such uncreative, lazy personnel decisions.

    • Mike says:

oh wait… he helped win the world series.. go fuck yourself

      • TryAgainLoser says:

He didn’t help shit in the World Series, Ryan Madson had to go in and mop up this turd’s messes. Go back and get facts before you assume that because he was on the team at the time that he actually helped; he didn’t.

  10. Tacobellmanager says:

If I was the reporter, also, noting that Alfonseca was restraining him, I would have said, “Yeah, and you’re a big man when you’re being held back by 11 fingers.”

  11. Bob S says:

“I’ll knock you f’n out” should have been followed by the reporter pulling out the “perhaps you’ve mistake me for your wife” card

    • T says:

“I’ll knock you f’n out” should have been followed by the reporter pulling out the “perhaps you’ve mistake me for your wife” card

      – Bob, greatest post on here!

  12. Big Baby Brett says:

Brett Myers is an underperforming, overpaid abuser!

Doesn’t matter who he’s abusing, a woman, a writer; he’s an abuser through and through who controls himself as well as a 7 year old!

Brett, next time you want to play your tough guy act (which, by the way, is really, really OLD), go beat up an old lady.

You’re no tough guy, don’t be mislead; you’re a punk loser who can only prove his masculinity to himself by abusing others!

    Brett, go F yourself!

  13. Greg H says:

I was at that game and both of those homers were no-doubters. The only person in the ballpark who thought they were popups was Brett Myers.

  14. TL says:

I love how people try to be the voice of reason, yet show an incredible amount of ignorance.

“The only athletes (well, they play baseball which is almost a sport) who fight worse than MLB players are NBA players and the basketball players are huge so at least you have the fear that a punch might actually connect one day.”

Anybody that’s watched any fights knows that size doesn’t count for everything. Watch some MMA. And how can you say baseball’s not a sport? How many people can throw a 1hopper from center to home, or knock a ball 400 with a wooden bat. College players have a hard time doing it with metal.

Now, to the real reason I wanted to comment… Cut Brett some slack (Not that I accept what Brett did) – The guy is frustrated… anybody competitive knows how hard it is to get destroyed like that. The last thing you need is someone coming in like a know it all, who hasn’t played the game on the same level if at all, giving him attitude. I know it sounds like the reporter didn’t say anything bad until the “How do you spell that?” question (which just because he didn’t swear doesn’t mean that it’s more classy than what myers said… classiness is both intent and content)- But he was also giving attitude when he said, “You thought both of those balls were pop ups?”

Once again, I don’t agree with Myer’s actions, but he’s not the only one to blame. Takes two to tango.

  15. Don says:

TL, nice try, but Brett Myers represents the worst that professional sports has to offer. A lot of people are competitive, but that doesn’t justify verbally abusing and threatening to physically harm another person while in the meantime offending those who are or who love the mentally challenged. No rational person could write his behavior off as being “out of character”-it was totally “in-character”. How many times do you think he’s called his wife a “retard”? Never? Really? I’m betting over a dozen. Threatened to hit her? Followed up and did hit her? Maybe a few times, but I’m sure that’s because he’s just a “compeitive” guy and she was “giving him attitude” I disagree with the reporter if he thought Brett’s ranitngs were those of an idiot-to say they were is giving him the benefit of the doubt. They do speak volumes about his character, though, and are a reflection on those who reared him and those who associate with him. And quite possibly even a reflection on those who defend his actions.

  16. Pat says:

tough guy Meyers. He’s running around the lockerroom starting fight with reporters, but doesn’t have the balls to go after Milton Bradley or any other Padre afther they treated the Bank like their own personal toilet for the weekend. What a pussy.

  17. CW says:

I agree with both of the above comments… Don has a nice point about offending people, but TL is also right. There’s nothing more frustrating than having someone who has never been in the situation tell you what it’s like. I do believe, however, that Myers was wrong for what he did, no one deserves to be yelled at for doing their job-but no one needs to act like they know what it’s like out there, unless they have actually been on that level. It’s a two-way street and everyone needs to do their part to ensure there are no wrecks.

  18. CW says:

I was referring to the comments made by “Don” and “TL” by the way.

  19. Bill says:

I do not condone what Myers said at all and it was over the line. BUT The media has been getting a free pass for years and apparently can do no wrong, and there are no limits as to what they are allowed to report on and what to say in their reports. Just b/c you are an athlete this does not mean that the media has a right to all things in your life. If its a personal issue, it should be kept personal, and out of the media. Sam Carchidi should be fired for what he did (provoked and athlete), Myers should be fined and suspended as well. Carchidi wanted to get a rise out of Myers and he did and should now suck it up, and suffer the consequences of his actions.

  20. cj says:

Wow Mr. Myers clearly needs to get control of his temper.

  21. mern says:

Myers is a liability. There is no question he will do something to further embarrass the Phillies and Philadelphia. I can only hope that he does not hurt someone in the process. Do not blame anyone else for his actions. Shame on you if you do.

  22. Spencer says:

Brett Myers is a total hothead and a jackass. His actions past actions (the wife thing) and his verbal abuse of this reporter (Sam Carchidi) was over the line…

That being said – say you’re at work, you just F’ed everything up and someone wants to come talk to you about it. You’re pissed, angry with yourself and this guy comes in needling you in a sarcastic tone of voice. Bet you tell him to F Off too… maybe you don’t challenge him to a fight, call him a retard or anything like that, but you’re not going to listen to sarcastic comments / questions about your piss-poor performance.

Myers was wrong and is a PR Nightmare for the Philthies… but Carchidi isn’t entirely innocent either.

  23. BTJ says:

Anyone know who the “mousey” voice is that comes in at the end? Sounds like that guy just got a post-home run Ceasar Izturis tickle.

  24. Obou says:

BM: “Hey! You pointin’ at me motherfucker?! I’ll tell you what, dude, I’ll knock you mutherfucking out!

    Sam should of replied.

You mean like the 2 pitches you put over the plate.

  25. Affula says:

Brett Myers is a piece of shit asshole.
But if you think that reporter is innocent, I think you may be the retard.
That reporter knew EXACTLY what he was doing, he knew that Brett Myers would act like a child, and that if he tried to, he could get Myers to react this way.
I think people forget that media is business, HUGE business. Reporters are not always there to report, but rather for a story. In the professional sports media, it seems pretty easy to make news out of antagonizing athletes.

Myers shouldn’t have acted/reacted like that, but don’t be blind to what that reporter was doing.

  26. Nick K says:

    To: Michael Milici
Did you actually say “axed” in this quote ?

When Sam Carchidi, a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer AXED Brett if he honestly thought those two balls were pop ups, things got interesting.
If he axed him he would be dead, if he asked him he would probably get an answer

  27. Yeah, that’s what I said. He AXED him a question.

It’s not my fault he didn’t get the answer he wanted.

  28. lolbrett says:

Haha, Brett Myers is a fucking ass.

  29. mike says:

This is ridiculous to blame Carchidi. The guy is there to report on the game, so he asks Myers about the two homeruns he gave up which were pretty crucial. Myers gave him a b.s. answer about them being pop-ups, so Carchidi pressed him on it a little. He was even diplomatic by saying he only thought the first one was out, when clearly both were smashed and there was no doubt.

Also, you guys are reading into his “can you spell retard” comment wrongly. He wasn’t challenging Myers’ reading ability, he was making a deadpan joke as if he were taking notes and writing down everything Myers said. It’s an old reporter’s joke, used in this case it seems to try and defuse the situation. It didn’t work.

Myers is a petulant man-child with a beer gut who likes to fight women and smaller, older men, and has an apparent penchant for blowing games for the Phillies. On top of that, he’s a complete dick. Carchidi just didn’t take crap from him, and good for Carchidi. If someone calls me an f-ing retard and threatens to fight me, even at work, Lord knows I wouldn’t back down.

  30. dean says:

first off the phillies are not in the closer mess becuase of pat gillick you simple fucks its ed wade. wagner wanted an extension at the all star break and wade would only give him 2 years when he wanted three. after that the ties were broken becuase wagners feelings were hurt. myers has done a good job at what he needs to do and the reporter should know not to try to get under his skin after a rough game. all these reporters are assholes and need to back off the team. they play their hardest every night and deserve better. so lets back off the team and let them do what they are capable of and stop taking the time of petty skinny reporter assholes

  31. Prof. Peabody says:

You are all retards, you think you know what it is like to have poeple criticize your every move at work. And don’t go with the “those who love the mentally challenged”, the federal government still funds the Vocation for Retarded Citizens. And the fact that he hit his wife, or spit in her face is really of no concern here, or to any of you. Let’s bring your personal life into play everyday at your job. So he’s an Ass…so is Roger Clemens, so is A-Rod, you Phillie fans are all “retards”! Reporters should NOT be allowed to do the things they do. ANd Just so you know, this little exchange is PART 2, not the 1st between the 2. So, before you spew all your knowledge, know the facts. This guy has provoked Myers in the past, simply because he knows he has an anger issue. Kudos to you all though, don’t support the guy for trying to get help, see if you can piss on him until he snaps….REAL CLASSY…Thats why they all say around the league, Phillies fans are the most unknowing fans in all of sports, your hearts are in the right place…but, well, your all retards!

    • Mike says:

Classy commnent deuche… I am a phillies fan but i agree with you that the reporter is pretty much a scumbag… and should be banned from the clubhouse.

  32. Geoff says:

“Yeah, that’s what I said. He AXED him a question.

It’s not my fault he didn’t get the answer he wanted.”

What are you talking about?? He axed him a question? Are you what Myers was referring to??

  33. Dude, you totally spelled “Jeff” wrong.

  34. SP says:

I think “Prof. Peabody” is Brett Myers. Or one of his best friends. What a dumb rant. ;)

  35. Maddingo says:

Did I hear somebody say the media shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this behavior? Really? Sam asked Myers if he thought they were both pop-ups. Myers said “yeah, didn’t you?” He ASKED the reporter’s opinion, and then called him a retard when the reporter’s opinion didn’t match his. Sam didn’t do anything wrong.

Someone said the reporter should be FIRED, but Myers should be SUSPENDED? So Sam loses his job because he asks a question, but Myers gets a slap on the wrist for threatening and being verbally abusive? People have to get their priorities straight.

This reporter wasn’t telling the guy how to do his job. He didn’t sound sarcastic when he asked if Myers thought both hits were pop-ups. If anything, he sounded incredulous, because it was obvious both balls were no-doubters.

To all of you who say Myers’ wife beating is personal: Seriously? It’s a crime. Maybe he didn’t do it on the field, but Michael Vick wasn’t fighting dogs on the field, either. Arrests are PUBLIC record. And in my opinion, a player who beats his wife after a game is a low-life turd. Everyone should know about it. And the sonofabitch should be in jail, not making millions in a Phillies uniform.

This is a classic case of a bully who thinks his shit doesn’t stink. And if you hint to him that it does, he’ll thrash you. As long as you aren’t bigger than he is.

  36. Jeremu says:

That was hilarious. I’ve replayed it about 10 times. Definitely made my day. There is nothing funnier then when a dude with anger issues goes on a profanity laden tirade.

Both guys are total douches, by the way.

  37. Dugout says:

    Myers has some temper problems…

http://www.rootzoo.com would love to see this! Come on over and post it!

  38. mike says:

Boom outta here… Brett is such a prick that that reporter should’ve kicked his ass

  39. pucchiachia says:

the clip only gets better with time.

  40. jrh says:

still playing this on the Howard Stern show when they go to breaks….hilarious.
