Third Time’s a Charm?

This one's for you Ronde...So, I got my wish, begrudgingly. I got the Rays. For better or worse, all that stands between Philadelphia and a world championship is Tampa Bay. Again. This humble little area (Tampa and St. Petersburg are the cities, Tampa Bay is the region) is a mere half hour from the Philadelphia Phillies spring training complex, which also houses the single A affiliate of the Phils, the Clearwater Threshers. I’m sure you’re all well aware of the Philadelphia sports drought of 25 years without a championship, by far the longest of any sports city with 4 major sports teams. During these wonderful 25 years, the region of Tampa Bay has won two championships. In both cases, Philadelphia sports franchises were simply a victim along the path. Let’s revisit those two awful moments in recent Philly memory.

Its early 2002. The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing to host their first NFC Championship game, and their last game in fabled Veterans Stadium. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came into the game as the Eagles’ whipping boy, beaten the previous two seasons in playoff trips to Philly and an earlier trip that season. Brian Mitchell took the opening kickoff deep into Tampa Bay territory. Two plays later, Duce Staley ran the ball into the endzone, and the Vet was jumping. Another pummeling of the Bucs awaited. One slight problem. That was the last highlight for the Birds. I’m still waiting for someone to tackle Joe Jurevicius. Ronde Barber running down the sidelines haunts my dreams. To date, that is the single most painful loss for me as an Eagle fan, more painful than the Super Bowl. The Bucs rode the momentum of toppling their nemesis to a destruction of the Raiders in the Super Bowl, winning title number 1.

Two years later, the Tampa Bay Lightning had now taken the hearts of the local faithful, roaring to the top of the Eastern Conference. In the Eastern Conference Finals, they ran into the third seeded Philadelphia Flyers, who had roared through the defending Cup champion Devils and 2nd seed Maple Leafs to reach this point. The teams traded games 1-6, with the Flyers forcing a decisive game 7 with a late Keith Primeau goal sending the game to OT, and a Simon Gagne overtime winner less than 2 minutes into the session. Game 7 in Tampa, and both teams struggled to take control. The injury-depleted Flyers fell behind 2-0, and despite a Kim Johnsson goal midway through the 2nd, the Flyers were unable to repeat game 6’s heroics and lost 2-1, ending their playoff run. The Lightning went on to beat the Calgary Flames in 7 games, winning the last “old” NHL Stanley Cup. Tampa was 2-2 in their defeat of Philly on their way to a title.

On Wednesday, round 3 of Tampa Bay vs. Philadelphia begins. The Rays are the newest team to the Tampa Bay scene, and are looking to join the Bucs and Lightning on the championship stage. Considering the incredible turnaround from last season, the Rays walk into this series with little pressure. Meanwhile, the Phillies carry the burden of an entire city’s unyielding desire for a citywide block party. The Phillies have nothing to do with the Flyers of ’04 or the Eagles of ’02, and have made every effort to distance themselves from the history of this maligned city. Nor have they had a part in this Philly-Tampa history. There’s no real rivalry with the Rays. The Rays are a perennial AL doormat, its impossible to hate that team. The Rays are simply a team standing in the way of the prize that we Philadelphia fans desire. As a Philadelphia fan, with the burden of the championship chase transcending all the major sports, and yes, hockey counts, this history adds some fire to this series.
