VIDEO: Dirty Coco Crisp Aims For Cock

Getting caught stealing in the eighth inning of a game your team is winning by 4 runs is no big deal.

Unless you’re Coco Crisp, in which case you make like Shelley “Duvall” Duncan and go after Akinori Iwamura’s cock.

My money’s on Jonny “Crazy Bitch” Gomes making sure Pedroia can’t make babies.

Or would only A-Rod pick on someone so tiny?

UPDATE: Ian has video over at Sox&Dawgs of the NESN analysts playing apologists for Crisp, and Crisp’s postgame comments.  While entertaining, I’m not convinced.  The video shows Devil Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett reaching for a low throw on another Crisp steal attempt in the 6th inning, and his knee blocks the base.  Because Bartlett is leaning awkwardly to get the low throw, I’m unconvinced the knee was intentional — maybe Crisp and Bartlett exchanged words, but Crisp makes no mention of this.  I still think Crisp’s play in the 8th was dirty, but comparing him to Shelley “Duvall” Duncan is probably excessive.
Still, this is Jonny’ walkup music….

  1. Ian says:

watch what happened in the 6th inning when Coco slide into second before passing judgment.

I’m not arguing the fact it was a dirty slide. He was only retaliating for what happened in the 6th inning when Jason Bartlett blocked the bag with his knee, which is a no-no.

  2. Duncan says:

I have to agree with Ian up there. Crisp had his thumb jammed when the stupid sonuva…blocked the entire base with a knee earlier in the game…when he saw it happening again he decided to take action.

iwamura won’t do that to him again. :-)

  3. David Chalk David Chalk says:

Thanks for the video, Ian. It’s interesting — but I’m not convinced Bartlett intended to drop the knee. We’ll see if the Devil Rays buy it anymore than I do — and if it costs Coco any games….

  4. Ian says:

David I agree with you that Bartlett may not have done it intentionally after watching it again. But either way he did it and Coco got his retaliation.

Either way, hopefully that’s the end of it all and both teams just go about their business of playing baseball and winning games.

I really don’t think either team wants to lose anybody to a stupid injury from any sort of retaliation.

  5. David Chalk David Chalk says:

I think we could spare Gomes or certainly Willy Aybar in the name of retaliation. Especially if it’s not a close game. If we’re somehow getting swept, a little bloodletting might pump the squad up for the rest of the road trip.

  6. J Rose says:

    Three notes about this incident:

    1. Bartlett’s play was dumb, but I don’t believe it was intentional, whereas Coco’s was both.

    2. Why was Crisp retaliating against a different player?

    3. Did Coco really say “tic for tac” in Ian’s clip? Because if he did that’s one of the best Emmitt Smith-isms I’ve ever heard!

  7. matt says:

“Why was Crisp retaliating against a different player?”

Because he can’t magically force the correct player to cover second? Much like hitting a batter in retaliation because the pitcher doesn’t come up to hit. Strange question.

As for the slide, sure it was dirty. He felt strong enough to retaliate. It doesn’t matter at all if dropping the knee was intentional. Meaningless. He now knows how others take it. Coco made his point. Now if coco takes one in the back, so be it.

  8. Muddy says:

    Wow, Sutcliffe is awful.

  9. Chad says:

Intentional or not, the dropping of the knee was not right. Saying its ok because it wasn’t intentional is like saying its ok hit a pedestrian with your car because you were on your cell phone. “I didn’t MEAN to!!” Bottom line is, it happened, and Coco retaliated. Do I agree that it was the right thing to do? No. But it happened and it should be over now. If the Rays do something else, its not retaliation, its starting a new round of shit. I bet Pedro Martinez is chomping at the bit to put on the Sox uni for one more game. He LOVED hitting Rays.

  10. Adam C says:

    Maddon is a whiny bitch.

  11. J Rose says:

    Matt,

I think your answer was stranger than my question as the two situations have absolutely no correlation. A pitcher hits someone else in the lineup precisely becuase he does not have a chance to hit the opposing pitcher, but a baserunner could have another chance to retaliate against a shortstop who wronged him. Just get on base and steal again and wait for the right man to cover.

Retaliating against someone else is like saying, hey Joe punched me in the mouth, so I’m gonna go punch John to get him back. Bartlett wronged Coco, so he should not have taken it out on Aki’s nutsack. You know, tic for tac.

  12. babaoje says:

Have you ever watched a baseball game before J Rose? A majority of the time the player who is retaliated against who who is doing the retaliating is not involved in the initial conflict. If you could name me one other way that Coco could send a clear message to not drop a knee when covering second I would like to hear it. You can’t expect to get on base with an opportunity to steal again in a game, just because somebody different is covering, especially when it is already the eighth inning.

  13. J Rose says:

No I’ve never watched a game before. I’ve only been attending/watching games since 1978, how bout you? And in all the games I’ve seen the only time someone retaliates against a different person is a pitcher/batter situation, or if one guy is just trying to send a message in general, not somehting directed at a specific player. It makes no sense to go after a guy who had nothing to do with the previous incident. Bartlett was the one who dropped the knee, so Coco’s gonna hit Aki in the package?

And if you don’t get back at the guy that game, you get him the next game or the next series. You store it away and get your revenge later. You’re gonna tell me Coco’s not gonna get on base against the Rays the rest of the season? That’s how things like that are usually resolved, not blindly taking out your frustration on someone who had absolutely nothing to do with the initial play.

The way Coco did it almost ensures he will be hit tonight and this will escalate because he blindly attacked someone who did nothing wrong in the first place. if he waited and got Bartlett, the man who deserved the retaliation, the situation would be over.

  14. babaoje says:

Maybe you should start paying closer attention, old man. The slide wasn’t so much to get revenge as send a message, and in this case its better to send the message to play the game correctly sooner rather than later. This is how the game polices itself. Football has personal foul penalties; hockey as enforcers and fights; basketball has bench clearing, crowd entering riots; baseball has hard slides, beanballs, dugouts clearing so everybody can stand around and watch two guys slap at each other for a little while, and the occasional Don Zimmer getting thrown to the ground. Don’t get your panties all in a bunch because there is some testosterone being thrown around on the field.

  15. Scott says:

It seems everyone agrees that Bartlett shouldn’t have dropped the knee but the problem I’m seeing with Coco’s side is this. He says he retaliated because of Bartlett but went after Iwamura. Then he says don’t go after anyone else on his team because he did it. Tons of hypocrisy in that statement! If they decide to hit Coco, so be it. I’m mad at Aki now as a Rays fan though because this is twice he’s been punked (see Shelley Duncan) and hasn’t stood up for himself yet! Be a man Aki!!

  16. jrielsky says:

Yeah and Jonny Gomes and Carl Crawford are real straight up players for jumping on the pile when Navarro already has Crisp down and throwing multiple punches. You suck Tampa, you always have and you always will…

  17. jrielsky says:

There is some justice… that pussy Gomes got ejected. Since this is a pattern of his behavior he should get a major suspension. If he thinks that’s tough he oughta try boxing or ultimating fighting, or maybe just try to kick his dog.

  18. Kelvin says:

there’s nothing wrong with blocking the bag with your leg. You just gotta have some balls to do it because most likely your gonna to get spiked.

  19. jrielsky says:

so Bartlett blocked the bag with his leg while Crisp was sliding head first and there’s nothing wrong with that… so next time Crisp figures they are going to block the bag he’s going in hard, and there’s nothing wrong with that either …

unless your name is Joe Maddon and you think you’re the only one allowed to play “hard-nosed” baseball… which apparently includes encouraging your players to throw dirty punches in the pile like Gomes and Crawford.

  20. Jeff says:

I think this is the first time I have ever agreed with J Rose.

  21. J Rose says:

    Thanks, Jeff (I think!)

It’s possible (but doubtful) more people might see it my way after the incident last night, which makes Coco look like even more of a jackass now than the original event.

Talk about handling something the wrong way. First he takes out his frustrations on the wrong guy, then when the Rays harmlessly but rightfully pay him back he incites a full-scale riot, which probably resulted in the Manny-Youk ordeal as well.

Count on Crisp be moved by the trade deadline now. The Sox have no room on the roster for someone like this.
